The film “Albert Nobbs,” taking place in 19th century Ireland, a time when the oppression of women was rampid and getting ahead in the business world for women was nearly impossible, Oscar Award Nominated actress, Glenn Close, plays a woman disguised as a male waiter in order to work and save money toward her dream of opening a tobacco shop. Her role is touching as we see her struggles of hiding her true female identity under a man’s dress suit and even going to such great lengths of asking a young woman to marry. Close’s transformation is truely amazing as she sports a short haircut and unglamorous attire. Her role as a male waiter is painfully believalbe as she endures awkward situations and confusion regarding how to hide her identity while striving to get ahead in the business world. Through her experience working as a waiter at a high end Dublin hotel for the wealthy, she encounters with great surprise, another person in a parallel situation–another woman, played by actress Janet McTeer, disguised as a man with the objective of making money and getting ahead in Ireland. She finds comfort in her newfound friendship and receives advice to take a wife who can aid her in furthering her business aspirations further as she has hopes that her new spouse can work the front counter in her future store. The deep sadness of her situation is revealed as she is constantly in fear of revealing herself and remains in hiding. Glenn Close’s performance is truely convincing and moving, causing the viewer to empathize deeply with her character’s predicament. Close was nominated for a Golden Globe this past January and is also nominated for an Academy Award for her role in Albert Nobbs.
