Celebrating the 35th Anniversary of the Mill Valley Film Festival



From October 4th – 14th, 2012 the 35th Mill Valley Film Festival returns to Marin County with a slew of noteworthy actors, filmmakers and films. This year’s festival opens on October 4th with two Opening Night Films: “Silver Linings Playbook” at CineArts@Sequoia in Mill Valley at 7:00 PM and 7:15 PM directed by David O. Russell [he is expected to attend] of the Oscar-winning drama “The Fighter” and “On the Road” at the Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center in San Rafael at 6:30 PM and 6:45 PM directed by Walter Salles [he is expected to attend]. Following the two screenings will be the Opening Night Gala featuring local wineries, breweries and Marin chefs preparing farm-to-table cuisine.

Then, the festival closes on October 14th with the Closing Night Film and Gala. The Closing Night Film is the much-anticipated epic journey of adventure and discovery, “Life of Pi” [based upon the best-selling novel by Yann Marte] directed by Academy Award Winning Director Ang Lee, who will be honored at MVFF.

With Dustin Hoffman [“Quartet” – directorial debut by Dustin Hoffman, Tuesday, October 9, 7:00 PM at Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center] and Mira Nair Tributes [Wednesday, October 10, 7:00 pm at Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center] to Spotlights on John Hawkes [screening of “The Sessions” on Saturday, October 6, 7:00 PM at Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center] and Billy Bob Thornton [screening of “Jayne Mansfield’s Car” directed by Billy Bob Thornton on Sunday, October 7, 6:30 PM at Christopher B. Smith Rafael Film Center], as well as a Centerpiece Spotlight on Dreamworks Animation [screening of “Rise of the Guardians” on Wednesday, October 10, 7:00 PM at Century Cinema, Corte Madera], MVFF will not disappoint. Further, there will be an appearance by “ARGO” director and actor Ben Affleck [Friday, October 5, 7:00PM at Rafael 1-appearance, and Friday, October 12, 9:15 PM at Rafael 1].

And as part of the 35th Anniversary celebration of the Mill Valley Film Festival the legendary and family-friendly film, “Star Wars” will be shown on Monday, October 8th [Pre-show starts at 5:00 PM with screening at 6:00 PM at Century Cinema, Corte Madera]! It is an amazing experience to see iconic films return to the big screen! According to Zoe Elton, director of programming for the Mill Valley Film Festival, “The Mill Valley Film Festival has a strong commitment to the Bay Area.” With documentary films such as “Rebel With A Cause” [Saturday, October 6, 6:15 PM – Sequoia 2 and Tuesday, October 9, 4:00 PM – Rafael 1] and the World Premiere of “Village Music: Last of the Great Record Stores” [Friday, October 5, 6:30 PM – Sequoia 1 and Monday, October 8, 9:30 PM – Rafael] we see the strong support that is given to the Bay Area community.

And included in MVFF35 are special live events in the ASCAP Music Cafe produced by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Pulbishers taking place at Corte Madera’s Sweetwater Music Hall & Cafe from Thursday, October 11 – Saturday, October 13 from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM [19 Corte Madera Ave., Mill Valley].

With 92 features and 62 shorts ranging from Valley of the Docs, Children’s FilmFest, 5@5 & MVFF Shorts, World Cinema, US Cinema, and the many special events, MVFF35 is not to be missed!
