Zheng Saisai claims Mubadala Silicon Valley Championship
27 Aug, 2019
Unseeded 25-year-old out of China, Zheng Saisai, ranked No. 47 in the world, wins the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic, a WTA tournament that is part of the US Open Series, on August 4, 2019 in San Jose, California. A smart and strategic player who studies her opponents games on video before each match is the first Chinese singles champion in San Jose. In the final match on Stadium Court, Saisai outplayed her Belorussian opponent, Sabalenka, whose emotions ran high and untamed.
In a determining tiebreak where Zheng came out the victor with an initial 4-1 lead and final score of 6-3, 6-7, she reached a career high of No. 38. In the post-match press conference, Zheng attributed her strong game to her best friend in Hong Kong that she has played doubles with, who gave her advice to be “calm” and “not so emotional” so that she doesn’t feel under so much “pressure and expectation” and “not think about the results.”
In the recent 2019 US Open match on August 26, Zheng was defeated by veteran player Venus Williams, 6-1, 6-0. However, we hope to see more from this new champion in other upcoming tournaments later this year.
