Cannes: 70th Edition Red Carpet Memories & a Look Ahead

The 70th Cannes Film Festival took place from May 17 – 28, 2017 with a birthday celebration like no other. 38,000 professionals from 55 countries attended the event in 2017. And the festival welcomed accredited participants from thirty film industry professions, alongside 4,900 journalists and media technicians. Further, 120 films, produced in 42 countries, were selected and participation in the Marché du Film broke records having 12,324 participants and 3,820 films shown.

The 70th edition saw moving and powerful in competition films such as “Okja” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Tilda Swinton directed by South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Killing of a Sacred Deer’, “The Meyerowitz Stories” directed by Noah Baumbach, Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled” and “Happy End” directed by Michael Haneke and starring Isabelle Huppert; out of competition films such as “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” directed by John Cameron Mitchell, the vitural reality presentation, “Carne y arena” by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and 70 Anniversary Events like Kristen Stewart’s “Come Swim”, Jane Campion’s “Top of the Lake” and David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”.

 

The 71st Cannes Film Festival is arriving soon and will occur from May 8th – 19th, 2018 with the opening evening on Tuesday, May 8th and the awards ceremony to take place on Saturday, May 19th. Australian actor Cate Blanchett will be President of the Jury of the Festival de Cannes for the 71st edition.

Speaking of her new role she stated:

“I have been to Cannes in many guises over the years; as an actress, producer, in the marketplace, the Gala-sphere and in Competition,” she declared, “but never solely for the sheer pleasure of watching the cornucopia of films this great festival harbours.” She went on to exclaim “I am humbled by the privilege and responsibility of presiding over this year’s jury…This festival plays a pivotal role in bringing the world together to celebrate story; that strange and vital endeavour that all peoples share, understand and crave.”

In response, Pierre Lescure, Festival de Cannes President and Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate, said: “We are delighted to welcome such a rare and unique artist whose talent and convictions enrich both screen and stage.”
