Margot Robbie & Allison Janney discuss I,TONYA [VIDEO]
26 Dec, 2017
‘I, Tonya’ is a dark, comical biopic based on true events about infamous Olympic ice skater Tonya Harding. In 1994, Harding was banned for life from the U.S. Figure Skating Association following her guilty plea regarding a physical attack involving fellow skater and competitor Nancy Kerrigan. The film, directed by Craig Gillespie, stars Margot Robbie (‘Suicide Squad’, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’, ‘The Legend of Tarzan’) as Harding from age 15 into her 20s, Sebastian Stan (‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’) as her impetuous ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and Allison Janney (‘The West Wing’, ‘The Help’, ‘The Hours’, ‘Juno’) who plays her stone cold, cynical, sarcastic and abusive mother LaVona Golden.
Decked out with retro hair styles and attire, ‘I,Tonya’ pokes fun at the eighties and nineties generations, as well as the life and controversy that surrounded the wild life story of Tonya Harding. Robbie is a fierce Harding, who as a child had no power over her mean spirited mother. With a awkward yet charming demeanor, she brings hilarity to the character causing the audience to chuckle throughout the film. In an interview with Dig In Magazine’s Cindy Maram, Robbie reveals that she did much of the ice skating herself following a great deal of skate training.
Watch our interview with Margot Robbie:
Allison Janney does an amazing job with her character LaVona Golden. She is so funny in the role as she sits on the couch in her home with a pet bird on her shoulder sharing her skewed side of the tragic and embarrassing story. Cruel hearted, she is never satisfied with her daughter’s efforts or accomplishments. When Maram asked Janney what attracted her to the character, the talented and accomplished actress explained that the role was written for her by good friend, screenwrtier Steven Rogers.
Watch our interview with Allison Janney:
Gillespie’s and Rogers’ witty and sophisticated filmmaking approach strongly stands out as parts of the picture are presented in a documentary style with the characters “popping out” of their movie roles directly speaking to the theater audience providing viewers with the inside scoop.
