Cannes 2017: French elegance meets Hollywood glamour
27 May, 2017
Dig In Magazine is here at Cannes Film Festival in the French Riviera for the second year in a row. But this year is extra special as it is the festival’s 70th Anniversary. Reminiscing about the 2016 festival, our highlights were seeing newly turned 18-year-old Elle Fanning, whom we previously interviewed for LOWDOWN and hung out at her exclusive after party following a screening of her film with Annette Benning, 21st CENTURY WOMEN at the 39th Mill Valley Film Festival (One of our favorite San Francisco Bay Area film festivals.) Last year’s 69th Cannes Film Festival was special, but this year topped that with the landmark celebrations.
Arriving on Wednesday, May 17th, the beginning of a 12-day run of the most famous film festival in the world, we picked up our credentials and recoverd from the fatigue that goes along with traveling across the world from a different time zone and caught up with friends and colleagues. The following day, we walked the red carpet of the (invitation only) Grand Lumiere Theatre to see WONDERSTRUCK starring Michelle Williams and Julianne Moore, as well as two younger stars that were fabulous. The film possessed a great deal of emotional depth expressed by Williams and Moore, the two seasoned and glamorous actresses that we are so fond of. The story follows the paths of two runaway children who head to New York City living parallel experiences, but during different periods of time. One, a young girl, during the silent movies era, and the other character, a young boy, in the 1970s hipster period. Both children are hearing impaired resulting in communications difficulties as they attempted to connect with others that are trying to help them. The film is a mystery possessing a plot twist that in the end fulfills the audiences deepest wishes for the characters.
The following days were filled with various competition film screenings (some of which took place bright and early at 8:30 a.m.) And the evenings were dominated by red carpets featuring famous international stars who turned heads in their black tie attire. Actresses and VIPs Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Tilda Swinton, Rihanna and Mary J. Blige stunned the media and guests in couture gowns that graced the red carpet steps. And celebs such as Jake Gyllenhaal, Alejandro Iñárritu, Adrien Brody, Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, Adam Sandler and Colin Farrell looked suave as they posed for the media and photographers promoting their latest film projects that were revealed to the exclusive Cannes audience.
