Diary of a Blogger in New York City: Day 2 – NYC Art

16 Sep, 2015

It’s the second day in New York with expectations of attending the U.S. Open, but unfortunately it is raining and the U.S. Open Semifinal is postponed due to rain delay. Waiting all morning to see if the rain will dissipate, I sit in my Upper West Side studio awaiting my next plans. By the early afternoon it is clear that the match would not be played, so I was able to attend a friend’s art gallery opening in Chinatown. So, in the evening I rode a cab to Amy Li Projects, an interesting gallery that has been covered by The Wall Street JournalWhite Hot Magazine and many other publications. Amy Li, the gallery owner and art dealer, operates her space in the front part of her father’s button shop—a shop that has been there for many years and a busy spot during New York Fashion Week as the shop works with clothing designers. Walking in, the gallery walls are covered with contemporary, abstract paintings by Australian painter Erin Smith for her new show “The Right Place At The Right Time.” Soothing pastel colors combined with images of human figures, which draw the viewer in to take a closer look in order to make out exactly what they represent, are intriguing to the eye and mind. From satire to mockery, Smith’s work is creatively controversial.

Amazing show, “The Right Place At The Right Time” by Australian #artist @hithereimerinsmith is on view now @amyliprojects until Oct. 31st. Swing by if you’re in #NYC! #ErinSmith #art #gallery #166mott #amyliprojects #diginmag Thanks to @briankimleo!

It was such a great opportunity to attend an art opening while I was in New York and connect with new and old friends! The night ended with good conversation over drinks at a couple of local, dim lit underground bars—one of which was hidden behind a high-end art gallery and needed a secret password to enter. Definitely one of the highlights of my visit to Manhattan.
