CRONIES LA Premiere at Sundance NEXT FEST

03 Aug, 2015

CRONIES (USA), a movie by Michael Larnell, who is a first time writer/director and New York University Film School graduate student of legendary producer Spike Lee’s, made a lasting impression on me. The film, which premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and New York City’s 2015 Tribeca Film Festival is making its LA premiere on August 9th at Sundance NEXT FEST. With documentary-style footage and interviews that break up various scenes, Larnell, who acts as the narrator throughout the film, has delivered a piece both unique and comedic. As we follow the characters throughout their day—going from cruising in their topless Jeep attempting to pick up on girls, then to a house party—the audience is taken along for the ride. Larnell succeeds in making the viewer feel like they are part of his character’s advertures.

In CRONIES, Louis, the main character begins to doubt his lifelong friendship with Jack, a reckless and irresponsible friend. He is now hanging with a new friend and the humor never ends as Jack is insecure about losing Louis’ friendship and jealous of “the new friend” Jack is spending more time with. Through true-to-life dialog, Larnell makes the characters come alive as they ponder friendship, familial love, and their futures.
