Interview with Elle Fanning by Cindy Maram
Dig In Magazine: You did such a good job in this film. How was it working with director Jeff Preiss?
Elle Fanning: I love Jeff! He’s here. I just got to see him. He’s known Amy, my character, for a very long time. So, they collaborated together and are close friends. I think it was amazing to have a director like Jeff who is so absorbed in the story. And [he] just loved the memoir that Amy wrote. He knew Joe Albany’s jazz music way before the script was written, because Jeff is a huge jazz fan. I think having a director like that was so important, because he wanted to do it [the story] justice.
DIM: What were the most challenging and most rewarding parts of playing the role?
Elle: I think the most challenging part was knowing that it was a true story and knowing that these events actually happened. Amy is still alive and was on set everyday. So, it’s a little intimidating when you’re playing someone and creating their life. You want to make sure that you do it right. That was definitely nerve-wracking. I guess the best thing that came out of it was that Amy said, after it was all done, “there couldn’t have been a better me!” And that made me really happy that I succeeded in playing her.
